Before you can choose a travel guidebook for your next trip, you need to think about what the focus of your trip will be. Some guidebooks have in-depth cultural information and give you lots of history about the area. Some concentrate more on seeing the major sights, finding accommodations, and telling you how to get around on local transportation.

There really isn’t a single series that will cover everything for every trip. You might even find you like certain things about two different guidebook series. Well, why not buy them both? You don’t have to carry them both around you know. We’ve even heard of people who cut them up…. while we, personally, have a hard time with dissecting books, it’s really not a crime.

Take the sections with you that you need. Cut them up into little sections so you can take just the sightseeing notes you need for the day. If you really want that book for a souvenir of your trip, buy two copies and leave the whole one at home.

Even if you’re a budget traveler, go ahead and spend wisely on a travel guidebook… a good one will SAVE you money on your trip.

Check through several different guidebooks. Do they cater to luxury travel? Can you afford the hotels and restaurants they’re recommending? Are they talking to backpackers and college kids? Do they list mostly hostels and cheap hotels? Get one that recommends accommodations that fit your budget.

See who has written the book, and what their expertise is in the region. Has the author traveled often in the area? Does he or she write in a style that makes you want to go and see these things for yourself? Have they checked out the hotels, eaten at the restaurants?

If one book has things like long, scholarly explanations about the foundations for castles, and you’re just not interested in that…, you might want to look for a different guide. Maybe something with lots of pictures to fire your imagination.

You can check some out of your local library and take your time looking at them, but also go to a large bookstore or one that specializes in travel so you can check out a really large selection of guides. If you find one that makes you feel like you can’t wait it get THERE and see THAT, then you’ve probably found the right one for you.

Once you’ve found the right one, or two, that will work for your travels, make sure you get the most current edition available and relax…. you can’t make a wrong decision. Any good guidebook will be a help.

If you need more information, you can probably find brochures or even guidebooks on you trip…. now THOSE could be great souvenirs.
Watch the video related to travel guide

Airport security rules have changed drastically in recent years. With air travel increasing greatly around the holidays anyone considering going this route is well advised to familiarize themselves with new rules put in place where they may cause the most delays. Namely airport security checkpoints.

Most passengers may think there is only one security checkpoint, when in reality there are usually three. This may vary from airport to airport but this seems to be the rule for most.

The first checkpoint will be when you register for your seat on the plane. You will need to show at least one proper form of identification. Usually a drivers license or a government issued identification card will suffice. You will then be given your boarding pass.

This is also the time when you will need to hand over the luggage that you will be checking for storage below the plane. These are commonly referred to as checked bags or luggage. To avoid delays you should check with the airline for specific items that may be banned or prohibited. In the past, only a small number of bags were hand checked, but now almost all are.

Many of these checks are quick look-overs, but you may be subject to a random, extensive search. This search often includes the checking of all baggage compartments, as well as the wiping of a cloth, which is looking for powdery substances.

Once through this stage you will encounter the main airport security checkpoint. This is where you will be asked to have your carryon luggage xrayed and you will have to go through a metal detector. Also currently all travelers are being asked to remove their shoes to have them xrayed too. In the past people where picked randomly for this excercise but now the only exception is of those with a disability or hindering medical condition.

Again, by familiarizing yourself with the items that are banned aboard an airplane, including items that are only prohibited from being stored in your carryon luggage, an unnecessary incident can be prevented.

In the event that you are found carrying a prohibited item, certain steps will be taken. Depending on the item in question, you may be required to return the item to you car, discard it, mail it to your home, or turn it over to airport security. Ensuring that you leave all prohibited items at home is the best way to prevent this unnecessary delay, which may cause you to miss your flight or even worse scenarios.

There is one final checkpoint to pass before boarding your flight. When entering the airport terminal, after your airline has granted permission for passengers to board, you will need to present airline officials with the appropriate boarding pass. At this time you may need to show your identification again. However, it is not always necessary.

It is best that you stay calm during all airport checkpoints, including the final boarding stage. Most travelers are easily able to board their airplane, but in the event that you are acting suspicious or drawing unwanted attention to yourself you may be pulled aside. So leave the anxieties at the door.

By being prepared and knowledgeable about what is and is not acceptable before ever entering the airport you will avoid unwanted delays and experience a much more pleasant flight.

Most who plan on traveling internationally probably know that new travel document requirements have been in place since January of 2007. Additionally, new regulations take effect in January of 2008. Here are some key considerations to make your preparations easier.

PASSPORTS: Because of new regulations required by the Homeland Security Act, passports are now required for air travel in Western Hemisphere countries that were previously exempt. Beginning in January 2008 those regulations extend to land and sea travel as well.

If you have never before obtained a passport, the procedures may be a little intimidating, but it’s very simple if you thoroughly research and complete the requirements well ahead of your anticipated travel date. Waiting too late and having to hurry or pay extra for expedited service simply adds to the pressure and the costs. Consider the following steps and resources.

• Begin the process of obtaining a passport and required visas well in advance of your travel date – by as much as 6 months.

• Thoroughly research passport and visa requirements. Do not assume anything. Requirements may change without much warning.

• Obtain the application, one for each member of the family that is traveling, including children and infants. As always, check the most up-to-date sources because requirements change. Ask questions. The applications may be obtained from many US Post Offices but must be delivered only to specified US Post Offices. See below for the link to the official US government site for specifics.

• Obtain 2 official passport pictures. Most portrait photographers can supply these, including Wal-Mart Stores that maintain a photography studio. Some US Post offices also offer photography services.

• Save your money for the occasion. The total passport fee is just under $100, not including the passport pictures. If you have to expedite the process, costs may be 2 or 3 times as much.

VISAS: Before you travel to a foreign country, check with the embassy or consulate of the country that you plan to visit. Ask specifically for their visa requirements. Be sure to mention the date of travel, because requirements change from time to time and you must comply with current regulations. The U.S. Department of State maintains a web site that contains information about visa requirements, but it may not be up to date.

Again, this is something you want to start on early in your planning stages because it may take you a few weeks to contact the appropriate agency and to receive response back. If you are required to secure a visa, that too will take time.

As with any official documents, when you receive them, check them carefully for accuracy. You do not want to be held up at the ticket counter or the customs gate because of what may seem to you to be an insignificant spelling or typo mistake. No mistakes are insignificant.

Just a word of encouragement with documentation. Carry with you always your personal picture ID and birth certificate and copies of your required documentation. If you are for any reason stopped at a checkpoint because of some inconsistency in paperwork, additional copies and more-than-required documentation may save you time and hassle. And, last of all, looking at the overall picture, a very low percentage of travelers experience any problems with documentation. Follow the requirements. Do not attempt to skip steps, and you’ll be just fine.

Rome style and history:

Rome is the bustling heart of Italy. A modern capital in every sense of the word yet steeped in history, with a wealth of art, architecture and religion to suit every holidaymaker, traveler, academic or pilgrim.

Over 2,000 years of history have left their mark in all parts of this stylish metropolis. Tradition has it that the city was founded by Romulus on Palatino one of the 7 hills on which Rome is built near the Tevere river, which guarantees that wherever you are you are never far from a stunning view of the city.
The most essential thing in Rome is a good pair of shoes! This is not a city where you take the bus to see the different attractions.

The whole place is like a huge, vibrant, open-air museum. Italians are a friendly people, expect to be offered help if you are standing on a street corner with a map in your hand and a puzzled look on you face. Style is the order of the day when out in Rome, good strong, but not bright colors a scarf flicked fashionably over and a smart bag over your shoulder, nom fanny packs please they do spoil the line of you Gucci you know!

Avoid eating in the tourist cafes around the main spots such as St.Mark’s square they are overpriced, very often with poor food and service. Go back a couple of streets to the small cafes frequented by the locals and you will get better, cheaper food and also get to dine and chat with the real Romans.

Colosseum: Probably the most famous landmark in Rome is a huge open-air stadium that could hold up to 50,000 Romans. Built by the Emperor Titus in AD80 it hosted games, gladiatorial combats and even could be flooded with water to provide a setting for reconstructions of famous navel battles.

Sistene Chapel: Situated at the far and of the Vatican museum, a day out in itself, the chapel was in need of a little decoration so in 1508 Michelangelo was brought to paint the 10,000 sq foot ceiling, single-handedly! The resulting work took over 4 years to complete and is considered to be on of the finest works of art in the world.

Fontana di Trevi (trevi fountain): A Huge and stunning eighteenth century fountain designed by Nicola Salvi, it is said that if you throw a coin with your right hand over your left shoulder you will one day return to Rome.

Piazza Navona: This square takes it’s strange shape from the original arena built there for displays of horsemanship, it is now a busy, fun place packed with stalls and eateries in the daytime and portrait and Caricatures artists at night.

Pantheon: A huge temple built by the Emperor Hadrian around AD120 it had, until 1960, the largest dome in the world. It also still has the original doors now nearly 1,900 years old. A fascinating and magnificent building.

Travestere: Not the main tourist center of Rome but a fascinating area full of winding lane and small shops selling interesting and unusual things, great nightlife food and a huge Sunday market. It is also home to what is said to be the oldest church in Rome. The beautiful Santa Maria the oldest part of which is said to date from the 3rd century AD.

Villa Borghese:The largest are of parkland in Rome it is a wonderful place to get away from the noise of the city fort a while. It has wonderful trees, quiet walks, a lake where you can rent a boat, and a wonderful art gallery. It also holds outdoor concerts of classical music every July.

There are many walking tours on offer and these are a great way to see the highlights of the city with a knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide.
Beware of over enthusiastic street traders in popular tourist spots such as the Trevi fountain.

Although a fairly safe city it is best to avoid the back streets at night and stick to the main thoroughfares, which are usually a sight in themselves as the stylishly dressed inhabitants go out for a stroll and a good meal. A great time for people watching, especially if you at one of the pavement table that many restaurants and cafes have.

But the main focus of any holiday in Rome should always be on the architecture and history which is like nowhere else in the world

Everyone knows that we need 4 Years of waiting to get involve Olympic Games. But now the games are quickly approaching, taking the host by China – one of the powerful countries in the world. Putting the controversy over the host aside, the Beijing Games 2008 is shaping up to be great. The facilities are simply astonishing. The Beijing National Stadium, nick-named the bird-nest, is certainly a unique piece of architecture. Herzog & de Meuron Architekten AG, a Swiss firm, won the bid to begin construction way back in 2003. Their other notable works include the Allianz Arena in Munich and the Tate Modern in London. The venue will have a seating capacity of 80,000.

With a newly designed, high-speed metro train service to help transport tourists to events and main attractions, visitors coming to the ancient metropolis are also presented with a series of user-friendly, innovative travel itineraries on the Beijing event website.

On testing the new train system from the airport terminal, Chinese President Hu Jintao told a group of foreigners that the country was ready to “open its arms and welcome all of the friends of the world to come.” Certainly, the city has not looked more attractive.

Among the must-see attractions, such as the famous Forbidden City – where visitors can stroll through the residences of China’s former emperors – and the monolithic Great Wall of China, the Beijing tourism authority has suggested a number of culinary and nightlife hotspots too.

On the list, include the happening Houhai Bar Street and famous restaurants Kaorou Ji and Dasanyuan. But tourists looking for a taste off the beaten track, should aim for restaurants recommended or populated by locals

Other recommendations include visiting the Drum Tower, Beijing’s ‘Big Ben’ and original time-keeper. Around the tower is an antique market worth exploring and the bustling Hutong fruit market. Other interesting parts of Beijing include the Underground City near Tiananmen Square, a subterranean network built when the country feared Soviet invasion in the 1960s and the Ancient Observatory, an incredibly preserved Tibetan temple.

Despite the full of joys you’ll certainly receive from friendly sport competitions atmosphere, if you have a chance to visit China during Olympic 2008, it might also be decent chance to get to know more about this giant country as every people in China see this world’s major sport event as an opportunity to dazzle the world. Traveling around, Shanghai is one of the China’s top destinations as such.

Ireland went through an economic growth period in the late 1990 s dubbed the Celtic Tiger . This along with an influx of Eastern European workers, due to changes in the European Union, has really influenced the cultural landscape of Ireland. In Dublin I interviewed Niamh Ni Mhir who works for Hostel World,a local IT business that rode the Celtic Tiger to become the biggest Hostel booking website online Niamh explains how Ireland has changed since my last visit, in the early 1990 s and also tells us what it is she likes about living in Dublin. Thanks to Jacobs Inn for providing fine backpacker accomodation for the Overlander.Music courtesy of Adam Shapiro of Doolin, from his Cape to Clare album.
Help answer the question about travel guide
what is a good travel guide for costa rica ?
I am going to costa rica in early march and am looking for a good travel guide so I don't miss any attractions. Also some tips on what to take and plan for.

London is everything you would expect from a Capital City with a lot of history and more, and the good news now thanks to the irresponsibility of bankers worldwide is that London is not as expensive to visit as it has been for the last 10 or more years.

The pound hasn’t quite sunk without trace though, it still has some value but because the London’s economy is so closely linked to banking and financial services the pound was hit pretty hard and that means that your Dollar, Yen or Euro is going to buy so much more.

When people talk about London or indeed England they usually mention rain, but because of global warming summers in London are warm to hot these days, and that makes sightseeing a dream and it has to be said there are so many sights both old and new to see, the Queen and The London Eye are on the top of most people’s list, but those lists will just goes on and on.

One great way to take in most of the sights of London is a river trip, because like most very old cities London was built on first one then both banks of a river, in London’s case the River Thames.

From a river boat you will be able to take in the Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, The Houses of Parliament, The South Bank Arts Complex, The Globe Theatre a reproduction of a theatre from the time of Shakespeare, the Tower of London while gliding effortlessly under famous bridges like London Bridge and Tower Bridge and of course see so much more.

As well as the river London is famous for large open spaces of green and you can escape from the almost constant noise of this City that simply refuses to sleep for a moment into the delightful parks like St. James’ Park which lies behind Downing Street where the British Prime Minister has his official residence.

Surprisingly you can wander the length of the Mall and still be in St James’ Park down passed Duck and even Pelican Ponds to Buckingham Palace where the Queen of Great Britain has her official residence.

You can even check to see if she is at home by looking to see if the Royal Standard is flying above the Palace. You will be lucky to see her ‘at home’ though because the Queen favours Windsor Palace which is about 20 miles to the west of London where it is quieter and less polluted.

London is a sightseers’ dream, there is always something around the corner, from the blue plaque on the wall of the flat where Jimi Hendrix died at the back of Oxford Street to the beautifully restored St Pancras station now home to the International Rail (Channel Tunnel) Rail Service but for so many years a derelict condemned building.

At night even more of London comes alive and as well as being able to enjoy some excellent free live music in the caf?and bars there is the exciting sight of the river-scape alive with lasers lights and often fireworks.

London is not to be missed and that is why it is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world and so it is probably no surprise that there are enough hotel beds in London to sleep the populations of dozens of major cities worldwide!

The surprise would be that most of these hotel beds are booked well in advance and so careful planning is required to get a great hotel at just the right price.

A good way to do that would be to use a website where you can compare prices and availability, though there are dozens of these here is an honest recommendation bookingspot.

Watch the video related to travel guide
